What is 3D printing and how does it work?

3D printing is a relatively new additive manufacturing process that creates 3D objects from a digital file. A 3D printer extracts material through a nozzle, following digital print to create layer after layer until the desired product is formed. For additional information see the “News and Blog” section of our website.

What is the quality of 3D printed products?

What is the quality of 3D printed products?

The grid-based creation of 3D printed objects can provide a sturdy and solid structure, however a majority relies on how the product is printed. Perhaps the biggest advantage of 3D printing is its customizability. Each 3D printer can control the nozzle temperature, feed speed, number of layers, width of layers, etc. At 3D Printed Solid, our equipment settings are customized for the best quality possible.

Please contact us at 3dps@3dprintedsolid.com with technical questions; we can design the best print for your application.

What kind of plastic do you print with?

What kind of plastic do you print with?

We mostly print with PLA, arguably the most prevalent bioplastic in the world. It’s commonly used for food packaging and handling. We also use ABS (the plastic that LEGOS are made from) and TPU (an elastic plastic that’s used mostly for phone cases and wire jacketing.)  Glow in the dark, silk, and carbon fiber infused plastics are also available per request.

Can you 3D print in materials other than plastic?

Currently, no. While there are specific 3D printers on the market that allow consumers to print clothes, metals, or foods, 3D Printed Solid specializes in only plastic prints.

How long does it take to 3D print something?

3D printing can take anywhere from half an hour to several days to possibly weeks. Time relies on a couple important factors: the size and complexity of the object, and the speed and temperature of the 3d printer itself. For example, a small keychain might take half an hour while a water bottle would take 5+ hours.

Is your plastic FDA approved?

No. While PLA plastic is considered a GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) by the FDA, it is not specifically FDA approved. We do not recommend using our products for any consumables.

How large can you print?

The maximum size print we can produce is in the area of  12” x 12” x 24” (304.8 mm x 304.8 mm x 609.6 mm.) However large parts can be split and printed in multiple pieces. Contact us at 3dps@3dprintedsolid.com for any large print inquiries.

How do I store and care for my 3D printed product?

Store in a cool, dry area.  Wash with soap and water.  Avoid an excess amount of heat. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PRODUCT SITTING IN THE SUN! For sun exposure, we commend using a UV plastic protectant to avoid disfigurement.
